Cairngorm – Coire Cas

Natural Retreat’s Cairngorm Mountain has been open over the past month and it was great to get back up there after my trip abroad to America. With Gus and Lewis working as Liftie/Park Crew they’ve put a shift in, alongside Cat Driver Mac, and got a park up and running on the Coire Cas! With 7 features in total and two lines to chose from its a great with snow available so early in the season. Fingers crossed for more snow fall over the next month so the park can get bigger and better as the season continues.

Angus was coaching for the first Sunday of the Cairngorm Snowboard Club, the weather was awesome, sun and no wind! The guys and girls got down into the park for a hiking session to end the off day as well. Looking forward to more days this season with the club and hope to see everyone progressing there riding and having fun!

Colorado #2

Last two weeks in Frisco, Colorado were absolutely amazing! The weather conditions stayed great with sunny park sessions every day. Unfortunately I tweaked my leg riding kickers in Keystone and had to take a back seat for a couple of days. With GB Team physio and Strength and Conditioning coach out in America alongside us, I was in the best hands. Rest and recovery helped massively, taking it day by day and building up my riding to strengthen the injury and muscles around it. I was back shredding well by the end of the trip and have made further progress still after returning home.

Last week of the trip it began to dump with snow! For days and days it continued to snow, we made trips to the gym and Woodward when we could, but the wind and snow caused the resorts to close. I was stoked to get more tricks learnt into the Woodward foam pit over the rest of the trip and I’m excited to take them to snow in the coming months!  As we returned to Denver to fly home for Christmas the snow got increasingly worse, it took us hours and hours to get down to the city and we were really unsure if our flight would be able to fly. Luckily we flew home just in time for the festivities to begin. Unfortunately the Loveland Pass closed shortly after we made it through stranding half of the guys in Denver for a couple of days.

I had an amazing experience traveling to America for the first time and I will definitely get back next December! The mountains and facilities are fantastic and I’m so stoked to have had the opportunity to train there.

Surgery, Snow & Schnapps

Its been a long couple of months for recovering from my knee surgery but finally winter has arrived and my leg is feeling a lot stronger and ready to ride on.

I’ve been going to the physio at the health centre in Aviemore since the start of November and I’m progressing through recovery very quickly, getting out on my bike a few times a week has been strengthening the joint and a some trips to the gym with Jamie have been helping my muscles get working properly again. It has started to snow a lot in the valley and the mountain is opening this weekend with a run from top too bottom – unfortunately I’m working so will miss it but can’t wait to get back on my board!

Day Lodge Webcam at Cairngorm

Having a few months down time and not having much to do has had its ups and downs, it’s been good to have a break from a busy summer working but I miss not having a weekly routine and it gets quite boring at home sometimes. On the plus side I have managed to travel down to Glasgow and Edinburgh to catch up with my friends who are at uni and experience the city nightlife which has been a blast (although it’s burnt a pretty big hole in pocket) and I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone and getting my aprés shred on over the winter break.

Hope everyone has a blast over Christmas and New Year and get’s a good schralp in at some point, pray of for snow and hopefully get some boxing day powder at the ‘gorm!

Colorado

I arrived in Denver on the 1st December and so far I’ve had an amazing week! Having never travelled out with Europe, I was thrilled at the opportunity to make the journey over to America. With a long haul flight full of team athletes it was going to be a fun trip, the ten hours passed surprisingly fast and before I knew we’d landed in Colorado.

After the immediate touristy excitement we drove on up to Frisco, celebratory Chipotle and then bed. Jetlag killed us all for the first couple days but with world class parks like Breckenridge and Keystone we didn’t spend much time lying around the house.

My reoccurring leg injury had been a problem over the summer and pre-season, with knowledge of a missed fracture appearing in scans and the development of a re-fracture in October, I was on strict rehab for this trip. First day at Breck, I was really unsure of what to expect from my leg and I was amazed when it performed incredibly well, no pain and feeling strong. I developed a progressive plan together with Alison the team physio, and have been working through it building up my riding as the days go by! I’m now able to spin all ways on the kickers and perform some of my harder rails tricks. I couldn’t be happier with my development this week and the injury is reacting really well to the gradual increase in intensity up on the mountain.

The facilities in the area are fantastic. With the Breckenridge Rec Center and Woodward at Copper only a short drive away we have been making the most of what’s on offer. John Noonan, Team GB Strength and Conditioning coach we’ve been heading up to the Rec Center regularly. With everything from free weight gym to tennis courts and swimming pool it’s perfect for down days and recovery sessions. Woodward at Copper is unbelievable facility with roller-boards, massive kickers, foam pits, a super tramp and more, it’s by far the best place to hone your tricks and prepare new ones for the next day up on the mountain.

I’m stoked to have another two weeks here and get working on a few new tricks before the European season gets in to full flow! Lots more to come on the blog so stay tuned!

Snowsports Scotland Coaching Summit and AGM

I was stoked to be able to attend the Snowsports Scotland Coaching Summit and AGM last weekend! Glenmore Lodge hosted a number of workshops going on throughout the weekend everything from Strength and Conditioning to Avalanche Awareness. I took part in the coaching workshop with Lesley McKenna on “Producing Olympic and world class level athletes” really interesting information and to be an athlete in that environment it was great to see everything from a different perspective, comparing to my own pathway, learning and performance.

The afternoon followed with Tony Stanger speaking on “Understanding Talent” a fantastic talk and again I could really see the points made from both athlete and the coaches side. Talking deeply on mindset of an athlete and how that is crucial to the long journey they have to the top end of their sport. Looking forward to putting the strategies and information into good use with the Cairngorm Snowboard Club over the season and integrating some of it into my own training.

Tony Stanger on Fixed and Growth Mindsets in athletes.

Sunday followed with Strength and Conditioning with Ross Gardener, took Angus along and got into the gym for knee rehab gym work for the both us! Great session and we’re both feeling stronger and much more confident with our injuries coming into the winter!  The AGM came after and was good to catch up with Les, Chair of the snowboard club and take part in the voting of new board members.

All in all, an awesome weekend took a lot away from it and excited to put the coaching workshops into practice as soon as the snow falls.
